  • LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL

    Challenging the boundaries of Marbleform®

A major event in the design community, London Design Festival celebrates and promotes London as one of the design capitals of the world. Needless to say, the Claybrook team were ecstatic to be approached by Conran + Partners to collaborate on the construction of a monumental tribute to architecture, design, food and faith within the powerful interiors of the German Gymnasium. How the sculptural installation seamlessly came together with different elements introduced from suppliers the world over, supported at its base by a Claybrook MarbleForm® moulded-stone construct, is testament to the diverse applications and structural integrity of MarbleForm®.

    How it began?

Design drawings and conceptual sketches were provided by Conran+ Partners, and so began a complex series of meetings between our in-house designers, product engineers, and production experts to mastermind a bespoke solution.

    Turning fantasy into reality

Conceptual drawings were painstakingly converted in to detailed technical drawings. Complicated matrices measuring size against estimated weight and mechanical data were tested to ensure viability of the structure. After all, as the base piece for the sculpture minimal tolerance had to be ensured for stability.

    It’s all in the making

This is where the hard work begins. After de-moudling the piece our skilled craftsmen set about painstakingly hand-polishing it to perfection. This process required over 200 hours on a piece of this scale to achieve a flawless finish. After passing through thorough QC the conical structure was carefully packed in to a custom crate before shipping to London where it was safely unpacked and assembled on site. The different elemental pieces came together perfectly complimenting one another for a truly delectable feast for the eyes! Taking 6 weeks from conception to completion, this fascinating project was an exercise in both creativity and precision. We are ready for the next challenge.
